"Are We Going?" is an immersive installation that transforms the familiar space of a public restroom into a site of vulnerability and empathy. Created in collaboration with the artist's non-binary partner, this work physically manifests the anxiety and complex decision-making that transgender and non-binary individuals face when navigating public facilities. The installation employs recognizable restroom fixtures and traditional construction methods, but distorts them through "entropic distortion" - warping the audience's expectations of this mundane yet fraught space to create feelings of vulnerability in viewers who may never have experienced the terror of simply needing to use a public restroom.
The title references the coded language the artist and their partner have developed - "Are you going, or are we?" - a question that determines safety and support in moments of basic human need. Through material manipulation and spatial distortion, the work questions the gender binary while amplifying the spectrum of gender identity, serving as both a confrontation between societal bias and human logic. Ultimately, "Are We Going?" aims to create understanding by allowing viewers to inhabit, even briefly, the uncomfortable reality of being queer in a predominantly cisgender world, humanizing a community often vilified by political rhetoric.
